Baked Macaroni and Cheese

Mac and Cheese

I love making this recipe.  It is fulfilling to make your own macaroni and cheese instead of making it out of a box that contained over-processed cheese food.  Ick!  Try this instead!

8 ounces elbow or seashell macaroni
2 tablespoons salted butter
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese
1 cup shredded Mozzarella cheese
1 cup seasoned bread crumbs
Salt and Pepper to taste


1) Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.  Grease an 8″x8″ square baking pan.
2) Cook pasta according to package directions.  Drain and set aside.
3) In a large saucepan over medium heat, melt butter.
4) Whisk in flour.
5) Add milk and cook until thick and bubbly, about 5 minutes.
6) Add in both cheeses and stir until completely melted.  Remove from heat.
7) In a large bowl, mix together the drained pasta and cheese sauce mixture until pasta is coated evenly.
8) Pour macaroni and cheese into the prepared baking pan.
9) Add salt and pepper to taste if desired.  Pour bread crumbs over mixture.
10) Bake in preheated oven for 30 minutes.  Bread crumbs will begin to brown.
11) Remove from oven and let stand for 10 minutes.  Serve warm.
